Before starting any sort of online search campaign you will have to develop a fairly large list of keywrods which are relevant to your landing page.
Keywords should be organized into categories based on their similarities. For example if you're trying to run a Work from home site in search, you would have categories such as "Work from home", "Home based business", "Extra income" and so on. In each list you would have many variations on the keywords based on "main" keyword for the group. Organizing your keywords into seperate groups will help in a few ways. First it will allow you find much easier which keywords are actually working and which ones are not working. If you had everything organized into a single category, you will have too many keywords to manage. Once they are broken into groups, you can run the groups one at a time, determining which keywords are working the best. In Google Adwords, having less keywords in each group will help your quality score as that is in part based on your account performance.
Organizing keywords into categories will help you run more optimized pages. Creating landing pages for specific keyword groups will help you get better click prices and make the results more relevant for users visiting your page.
Once you have started your campaign, begin to optimize the keywords, if certain ones are not converting very well, remove them from the list or lower the bid on that term. If you find you're not getting any traffic from certain terms, try increasing your bids or optimizing your landing page for specific keywords.
